Friday Night at the Twitch Bar asks, “And who’s behind that wonky door? Is it MJ? Is it Rishi? Make the call”.
This refers to a door that appeared as part of the backdrop for Twitch Bar gigs until mid-2022. The door had a wonky appearance. It was never confirmed whether this was a building defect or a deliberate design choice by the house builder. Someone suggested that the door was straight and it was the camera positioning that gave it the wonky appearance, but such nonsense was rapidly dismissed by the regulars who prefer to favour the less plausible explanation for such mysteries.
Theta equals angle of wonkyness
The door separated Aidy's performance room from a room occupied by singer-songwriter MJ Hibbett. At the end of each gig, Aidy would switch the camera feed to the other room and allow MJ to perform one song (initially Hey Hey 16K and later a choice with It Only Works Because You're Here). It is unclear whether MJ was held prisoner in the room between gigs, but he always performed with an identical chirpy demeanour, so was assumed to be happy with the situation.
Later, Rishi Karmadillo's You Must Be Mendel was added to the end-of-gig song selection. Audience members would decide who got to perform each week. Rishi took up residence behind the wonky door, which MJ was less than happy with. On a number of occasions, Aidy had to turn up his volume to cover the sound of them bickering.
Is it MJ? Is it Rishi? Make the call
Eventually, the Twitch Bar relocated to its new garage location and the wonky door was replaced with shelving stocked with audio-visual media and computing and gaming paraphernalia. This new look - somewhere between NPR’s Tiny Desk Concerts and the bit behind Moss’s desk in The IT Crowd - was well received by fans; What it lacked in wonky doors, it more than made up for with 80s micros.
